Oahu Spay & Neuter Program
Our spay and neuter program has stemmed from the need for affordable spay and neuter procedures. We have carefully researched the available options on Oahu, and have developed this program to address the need. While we may be an affordable alternative, we want to stress that our uncompromising standards for patient safety and quality of service are state of the art.
What really is spaying and neutering?
The term SPAY in both cats and dogs means a complete ovariohysterectomy. Both ovaries and uterus up to the cervix is removed during an abdominal surgery. This surgery can be demanding on overweight and large pets.
The term NEUTERING in dogs and cats refers to the removal of both testicles so that reproduction and hormonal influence is eliminated. Generally this is a shorter, less complicated procedure unless one or both testicles are still retained in the abdomen. To locate and remove them can also be difficult and demanding and is not usually covered in a reduced cost sterilization program.
As both surgeries involve full general anesthetic, complications can occur. (Some complications are as severe as death, on an otherwise healthy pet.) This is why at Kahala Pet Hospital ALL necessary precautions are taken to eliminate any potential risk. A list of these precautions are shown below.
- Pre-Surgical Examination
- Pre-Anesthetic Blood Profile
- Intravenous Catheter
- EKG, Blood Pressure, Oxygen Saturation, and Temperature Monitoring
- Overnight Nursing Care
- Intravenous Fluids and Pain Management
- Post-Surgical Recheck Exam and Suture Removal
